PROGRESSING THROUGH THERAPY | 2027 LEARNING SERIES

What Graduate School Didn't Teach You

Beyond the classroom. Beyond the textbook. Into clinical practice.

Graduate school introduced you to theories, diagnosis, ethics, and clinical techniques. But what happens when what you learned in the classroom doesn't quite match what you encounter in the therapy room?

A 12-month interactive learning series exploring the realities of clinical practice, challenging assumptions, and strengthening clinical judgment.

$15 per person, per workshop

Printed materials included

Who Can Attend?

This series welcomes master’s-level Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Social Work students, provisionally licensed clinicians, and fully licensed clinicians in these fields.

Whether you’re preparing for internship, navigating provisional licensure, or have years of clinical experience, you’re invited to examine familiar concepts through a different lens.

Eligibility: Student enrollment or professional licensure must be verifiable.

Not open to undergraduate students, Peer Support Specialists, or individuals whose only professional designation is Qualified Professional (QP).

Workshop Schedule & Recaps

October 2026 Recap: Explored the theoretical foundations of CBT, REBT, ACT, and DBT, examining how each approach understands psychological distress and informs clinical interventions through the application of a modified case conceptualization.

Building upon October’s workshop, participants will engage in a comprehensive case conceptualization, examining how different theoretical orientations influence assessment, treatment planning, and clinical decision-making. Particular attention will be given to biopsychosocial factors, race, ethnicity, and cultural considerations, including how theoretical approaches may benefit or disadvantage clients.

Why This Series?

Knowing a theory and knowing how to apply it are not always the same thing.

Clinical practice requires more than identifying symptoms, selecting interventions, and writing treatment plans. It requires curiosity, critical thinking, cultural awareness, and the ability to recognize when an approach may not serve the person sitting across from you.

What Graduate School Didn’t Teach You creates space to question assumptions, examine real-world challenges, and consider whose experiences are represented—or overlooked—in the approaches we’ve been taught.

This isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about learning to ask better questions.

CEO, MS, LCMHCS

I’m the founder and owner of Progressing through Therapy, PLLC, established in 2016, where I serve as the lead therapist, site supervisor, and clinical supervisor. I’m also a college instructor with Guilford College’s Wiser Justice prison education program.

Between counseling clients, supervising emerging clinicians, and teaching college students, I’ve learned that what works in a textbook doesn’t always translate neatly into real life. I enjoy challenging assumptions, asking questions, and exploring the parts of this profession that aren’t always covered in graduate school.
